These bowls were hand-made from the local clay of Istalif, Afghanistan. They were hand-painted in colors of green, blue, and brown natural dyes.
There were originally many different uses for these dishes. They were used to hold dried fruits, water, or to eat hot food from. The glaze coating of the interior of the bowl is still intact, enabling them to be used for food items.
